Restaurant Spotlight: Nicky Cheese
If you love American style pancakes, you might want to check this place out.
Yesterday, I found myself in Belgrano for some tramites and decided to check out this recently opened American-style breakfast spot called Nicky Cheese. Or “American Bistro,” as Nicky Cheese calls itself. Many of these types of places have opened in Buenos Aires over the years, with mixed results. There has also been a rise in excellent Argentine-style cafés with very well-made eggs, avocado toasts, and more, which has made the novelty of an American-style spot less appealing. But I saw recently a photo of some pancakes from this spot on Instagram and couldn’t resist.
I arrived around 11:50 am, and the place was pretty empty. But by the time I left at 12:40, it was jam-packed, with all the tables full. The space is not very big, having a long and narrow layout. However, there was a patio in the back with additional space.

Since I went on a Tuesday, I didn’t get to experience the weekend brunch, which I assume is much more extensive. The menu features classic American-style breakfast dishes, as well as traditional American lunch sandwiches, including a tuna melt, grilled cheese, and club sandwich. A lunch menu is available from 12:00 to 16:00, featuring salads, a Mexican bowl, roasted chicken, schnitzel with macaroni and cheese, and French fries.
I ordered the “American Breakfast”, which came with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, a hashbrown, and a giant pancake smothered in honey butter syrup. Other breakfast items available to order are a breakfast sandwich, three different types of pancakes (the chubby pancake comes with fried egg, bacon, and syrup; the creamy pancake with fruit, whipped cream, and syrup). They also have some more “healthy” items like a smoothie bowl, oatmeal, and a Greek yogurt bowl.
My scrambled eggs were a bit runnier than I usually like, but they were still very well made. If that is your style, this is your place. It seemed intentional. The pancake was amazing. Just look at the photo. Covered in a tasty syrup with melted butter on top. If you are craving pancakes, I can’t think of a better place in Buenos Aires. However, I never eat pancakes in Buenos Aires. So maybe I have no idea what I am talking about.
The hash browns were incredibly ambrosial, as was the sausage. They were very well-made, and it showed that some thought had been put into making these “authentic.” The bacon was good enough. It didn’t blow me away, but it was above average for Buenos Aires.
Another thing Nicky Cheese highlights is their selection of cheesecakes (5 different kinds). I didn’t have room to try after the giant “American breakfast,” but they did look very good.
Bottom Line: All in all, this was a fun little place to check out for something different. If you are an “American Breakfast” type of person, you need to add this to your list. If I find myself nearby again, I will stop in to try some items off their lunch menu, as well as sample the cheesecake.
